Next
pickup was the silver plate speed skater trophy on the
right..which I got from Brett Lowman...It's 8 5/8" tall and
quite heavy for it's size...1930ish in style...no engraving, no
engraving plate...I think I gave $75.00 for it...If I recall I
gave about $200.00
for the gold one out of an antiques store...it was issued by
Nester Johnson and awarded to Chicago speed skater Ray
Strodel...I showed you all the other speed skating pieces so
you'd understand why I got it...as it fits in with my other speed
skater stuff...The big
trophy with skate handles is 21 1/4"...awarded to Emil
Penner...The skater bronze statue in the center is serious art
sculpted by renown Vienna sculptor Bruno Zach done in the
1920's...

I
bought two drums at the show...this is the first one I got from
Brett Lowman...it's smaller than my other two drums at 6"
wide x 4 1/4" tall...It's not as nice as the football one
coming up next...but toy sports drums are so rare I wasn't passing
it up...Brett had $375.00 on it...Can't recall exactly butI
probably got it for $300.00...
I
bought the football one on right and baseball one on top at the
show The
baseball one on the left was a 2017 National pickup.

A
SPECIAL PICK-UP

|
|
I
was outbid on this c1895 toy football drum some
thirty years ago and had been on the lookout for
one ever since. After thirty years I spotted it
sitting in Glen Mechanic's booth. It was made by
the Converse Toy Company in Winchendon
Massachusetts, also known as Toy Town. The
founders son Atherton Darling Converse
1877-1956 graduated Harvard class of 1900.
Perhaps
his exposure to Harvard's rich football heritage
may have influenced the production of this drum. |

Notice
I'm posting six sides of this football one...It gets the deluxe
treatment as it was a remarkable find for me...I already gave the
story on this on the previous page...I post it again below...I
found it in Glen Mechanic's booth...
|
Copied
from Carlton's Pick-ups page 1 - So
continuing on with my second drum find!...I went over to Glen's
booth and spotted a football toy drum...But it wasn't just
any toy football drum...About thirty five years ago...before the
internet...John Kanuit
ran a small auction in Sports Collectors Digest...This exact drum was in the auction...I was pretty new to sports antiques
but I zeroed in on it...I forget
what I bid...all I know is the next day I called John and he
informed me I had been outbid...I've been very active in the hobby
ever since...I've covered a lot of ground and seen a lot in 35
years...and I've never seen another of this drum...So of course
I bought it...Well the story goes on...Somehow I learned there
at the National that fellow prolific collector Randy Johnson had
owned it and...and that thru a series of events it was
deaccessioned from his collection...Glen couldn't recall where he had gotten
it...but I found it in a past Hunt auction...And on the subject
of drums...you may recall I got
a baseball drum from the John Kanuit/Jeff White duo at
the 2017 National...so the football one pretty much
completed my drum collection... |
And
for my last pickup is this c1930 bicycle race pencil box...This
was another pickup from Glen Mechanic...Typical Glen....he's
always got a great selection of smalls...just a great eye...These
pencil boxes are fairly elusive...you just don't see them around
much...
