BOOTH
OF GLEN MECHANICK
|
Next
we come to the booth of the prolific Glen
Mechanick of
Mechancik's Historical Gallery from Clifton N.J. First up is a c1880
wooden pencil box (extra close in shots here,
here,
here,
and here),
with an illustration of what looks like a baseball team arriving for a
game featuring ten players lined up across the front in parade fashion. Of
all the antique illustrated pencil baseball boxes this one has always been
my favorite, little blemish on the right, 7 3/4" wide by 2 1/8"
deep by 1 3/8" tall, $500.00. Next was a non sport c1890 die
cut of a New York train on elevated tracks with a horse drawn trolley
below, 10 1/2" by 7 1/4", $375.00. Next was another non sport
item, a c1880
celluloid ink blotter featuring a great illustration of a bull dog,
advertising "The Bulldog Shaft Eye", 7 5/8" wide by 3"
deep, $385.00. Next was a celluloid
pocket mirror featuring portraits of the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates, and
inscribed "Pittsburg National League Champions" (Pittsburgh
misspelled), Honus Wagner at top center, 2 1/4" wide,
$3,000.00.
Next was a set of
twelve
stamps each featuring a different player from the 1914 Yale baseball team,
see photos above. I saw them and knew nothing about them except
they were striking...but after viewing the photos
again for this story....if I was ever going to have some stamps in my
collection...these would be the ones!!, each
stamp measured 2 3/4" tall by 1 7/8" wide, $600.00. According to
an auction
description in which these twelve or another were auctioned on Lew
Lipset's OldJudge.com website on April 4, 2013, it was a complete set. I
would speculate putting together a complete set of these could take a life
time to find them one by one, if it could even be done. Made by
Prichard Publishing Company of new York City.
Prichard also made like stamps for the New York Giants
baseball club same year 1914.
Next
was another Pirates
National League champions pin, See back here,
this one for 1901, featured Wagoner, and Jack Chesbro
among the others, little
smaller than the 09' at 1 1/2" wide, $6,000.00. Next was another portrait
pin back button inscribed "The Indians of Soo City 1900"
Could tell it was Sioux City Iowa by the photographers label on the back,
$1,500.00. Next was a Burley Boy pocket tobacco
tin, good shape, 4
1/8" tall by 3 3/8" wide, $600.00. Next was a little c1840
snuff box with a painted
scene of an early ball and bat game in progress, 2 5/8" wide by 1
3/8" deep by 7/16" tall, $1,500.00. more shots here
and here.
This was certainly in the exotic category, and a very advanced tobacco
collectible. Remarkable condition! Next was a c1890's photo
of ladies playing golf, great clarity, ladies were sure properly
dressed!, 10 1/2" wide by 8" tall, believe that incl. frame,
$750.00. close in shot here.
$1,500.00
for both

Last
mention for Glen's booth was one of the most memorable things I saw at the
show...and the most unusual I've ever seen at a National...Two c1895
matching tin panels, 24 1/4" long by 4 3/4" tall, featuring
color lithographed illustrations of boys playing football...all wearing
lace-up smock union suits, see photos above, pastel green and red
being the two primary colors...Glen didn't not know what they were used
for...I didn't for sure but my first thought was they were used as the
sides of toy drums. I recall a toy football drum John Kanuit auctioned
that was at least similar. However it's been twenty years and I can't
recall if the illustrations were the same...24 1/4" circumference and
4 3/4" tall would be about right for a drum...If I had to lay money
on it I'd say drum...but still not totally satisfied that's what they
were...Glen seemed to think wall/ceiling trim....big mystery.., Price
$1,500.00.
