YALE CAPTAIN

Nelson S. "Bud" Talbott

June 10, 1892 – July 6, 1952

All American 1913 & 1914

Nelson S. "Bud" Talbott was a head coach of the Dayton Triangles of the "Ohio League" and later a charter member of the National Football League. He served in World War I, World War II and the Korean War and rose to the rank of brigadier general. He eventually retired as the deputy director of procurement and production at Air Material Command, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Talbott began his football career as a starting tackle and halfback from 1912 to 1914, for Yale University. He was given to All-American honors in 1913 as a member of Walter Camp’s first team. In 1914, he was named captain of the Yale team. Bud led Yale to a 28–0 victory over Notre Dame, ending the Fighting Irish 27-game undefeated streak. He repeated with All-American honors in 1914, making several major newspaper first teams.

After graduation, he became one of the organizers of the Dayton Triangles professional football team. He coached the local team in 1916 and again from 1919 until 1921. From 1922 until 1923 he was head coach of the University of Dayton football team who had just changed their name from St. Mary’s University.

Family:
Talbott's father was a wealthy engineer who was involved in the construction of the Soo Locks on Lake Superior and had various railroad interests. He was also involved in the recovery of Dayton from a 1913 flood. His mother was active in the Dayton anti-suffrage league which opposed giving women the right to vote. She was also involved in the Anti-Saloon League and was a patron of the Dayton Westminster Choir. His brother, Harold E. Talbott, was the third Secretary of the Air Force. While his grandson,
Strobe Talbott, was a deputy secretary of state in the Clinton administration. -Wikipedia

Brickley All America.png (297717 bytes)

HARVARD CAPTAIN

Charles Edward Brickley

Nov 24, 1891- Dec 28, 1949

All American 1913 & 1914

Charles Edward Brickley was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the Johns Hopkins University in 1915, at Boston College from 1916 to 1917, and at Fordham University in 1920 with Joseph DuMoe as co-coach, compiling a career college football record of 22–9. Brickley also coached the New York Brickley Giants of the American Professional Football Association now the National Football League in 1921, tallying a mark of 0–2.

Early life and family:
Brickley was born in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in Everett, Massachusetts. He stood 5'10" and weighed 181 pounds during his athletic career.

Athletic career:
Brickley attended Harvard College, where he played football from 1911 go 1914 for the Crimson as a fullback and place kicker under head coach Percy Haughton. He was named an All-American in 1913 and 1914. During the 1913 Harvard–Yale game, Brickley kicked all five of Harvard's field goals in the Crimson's 15–5 win over Yale. He set college football records for most field goals made by one player in a single season (13) and most career field goals (34).[2]

Brickley also competed in the triple jump at 1912 Summer Olympics, finishing 9th. At the same Olympics he competed in the baseball event which was held as demonstration sport.

In 1917, Brickley became a player-coach for the Massillon Tigers, of the Ohio League.

Coaching career
Brickley's first coaching job was during his senior year at Harvard, where he served as an assistant to the University of Virginia football team during the team's August practices.

After graduating, Brickley was sought by many schools looking for head coaches, including New York University and Penn State. After initially refusing to coach, Brickley eventually accepted the head coaching job at Johns Hopkins University.

Brickley's drop kick to defeat Dartmouth in 1912.
In 1916, he led Boston College to its first defeat over rival Holy Cross since 1889. He left Boston College in 1918 to join the United States Navy Reserve. Brickley returned to coaching in 1921 as the backfield coach of the Fordham Rams, coaching his youngest brother Arthur. Brickley coached the New York Brickley Giants (Also known as Brickley's Giants or Brickley's Brooklyn Giants) of the National Football League in 1921. In 1922, Brickley was offered the position of head coach at Northwestern, but the two sides could not agree on terms and the school hired Glenn Thistlethwaite instead.

Later life
Brickley would not coach football after the 1921 season and would work as a stockbroker, shipbuilder, and advertising salesman until his death in 1949 in New York City. He settled in Bronxville, New York, where his two sons attended high school.

Legal trouble
In 1923, Brickley was indicted on charges of illegal stock negotiations. He was found not guilty of forgery and larceny by a jury on May 28, 1925. On March 1, 1928 Brickley was found guilty of four counts of larceny and bucketing orders from customers of Charles E. Brickley, Inc., stock brokerage firm, from 1925 to 1927. He was released on parole in December. In 1949, Brickley and his son, Charles, Jr. were arrested after starting a fight in a Manhattan restaurant. According to testimony, the fight began when Brickley overheard somebody say "Is that old bald-headed so-and-so Charlie Brickley, the football player?" or "You mean that old bald-headed man is the great Charlie Brickley?" Brickley died the day the charges against him were to be dismissed.

Family
Brickley's brother George Brickley, played five games for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1913. His youngest brother Arthur Brickley played football and baseball for Columbia (1920), Fordham (1921), and Providence (1923). Brickley's oldest son, Charles "Chick" Brickley, Jr. played football at Yale and was a minor league baseball player for the Boston Red Sox. His youngest son, John "Bud" Brickley, signed with the New York Giants in 1946 following his discharge from the United States Marine Corps. His grandson, John Brickley, was a kicker for the University of Rhode Island. His grandnephew is former National Hockey League player Andy Brickley. -Wikipedia

EXTRAORDINARY 1914 TEA INFUSER

By Carlton Hendricks

stumbled onto this exceptional football tea infuser on eBay after it closed...Had I seen it in time I'm sure I'd have gotten involved. I've never seen another.
Not only is it great football art it commemorates the 1914 Harvard vs. Yale football game, and the stunning defeat by Harvard. Harvard steamrolled Yale 30-0. Moreover that game was the first ever played at the Yale Bowl.

It may be small but the art work is first rate...The grips and seams, which appear to be engraved as opposed to cast, are very well depicted. Whoever crafted it had a very good grip, pun intended, on how a real melon football of that era looked. The listing description indicates it is missing the clasp retainer; but that's very forgivable when you've never seen one of these before...plus a silver smith could surly repair that.

It was made by a relatively obscure Ney York City silversmith concern named The Metcalf Co. In 1915 the Metcalf Co. was located at 5 E 35th in 1915 New York, NY. The company was founded in the early 1900s by James A. Metcalf, a silversmith who worked for Meriden Britannia and Simpson, Hall, Miller (International Silver) before forming his own company. Intel courtesy
925-1000.com....I have no idea if it was a one man shop and our infuser was designed and crafted by James Metcalf himself...or if the Metcalf Co. employed a team of employees.

There were
8 bids. Remarkably the listing didn't say anything ebay listing.png (627553 bytes) about it commemorating the 1914 Harvard Yale game, and it was only listed under: Listed in category: Antiques>Silver>Sterling Silver (.925)>Other Antique Sterling Silver...I would speculate it may have sold for more had all the bases been covered...That is, had it been listed in a sports memorabilia category and had the description included that it commemorated the 1914 30-0 Harvard Yale game, and that it was the first Yale Bowl game
