"THE WORLD'S GAME OF BASE BALL"

c1889 Board Game By McLoughlin Bros.
Commemorating Albert Spalding's 1889 world baseball tour

SOLD ON EBAY APRIL 15TH 2015

FOR $787.78

18 bids - Listing description below

listing.jpg (552650 bytes)
This is a rare antique board game called "The World's Game of Base Ball." It was copyrighted 1889 by McLoughlin Bros. New York.

The game was created to commemorate the first world exhibition tour of baseball led by Albert Spalding. Teams included the Chicago White Stockings and the All Americas. They played games in Europe, Great Britain and Egypt.

The lithographed graphics are superb, with colorful pictures of two players (Charles Comiskey and Robert Ferguson), and baseball gear including an early catcher's mask, a very early glove, wood bats and caps in the corners.

The game was played with a spinner, which pointed to corresponding numbers in the Rules for Playing under the lid. Turned wooden player pieces were moved around the bases.

The most recent sale I could find was at Heritage Auctions in 2013 as part of the Dr. Mark Cooper Collection of Vintage Baseball Games sale. They said that fewer than five of these games are known to exist, and that fine example brought $4,182. Another sold at Hunt Auctions in 2001 for $3,000.

This example was just discovered this week. It is in rough condition, and is offered as-found. Please enlarge all pictures and examine it carefully.

The original wood and tin spinner arrow is present, along with two of the turned wood player pegs.

The box shows great wear. Most of the lid paper graphics are intact with some creasing and paper loss. The apron of the lid is completely missing on one side, and there are tears and losses on the other sides. The interior lid is pretty good, with more great graphics and a couple of areas of paper loss. The game field inside is in good condition, but isn't perfectly flat. The walls of the lower part of the box also show breaks, losses and tears and some old tape repairs.

It measures 16" H x 9" W.

I am sure that a professional conservator could do a great deal to restore this rare and important game.

Offered with a very low opening bid and no reserve. It will be an outstanding addition to any baseball collection.

sphinx shot.jpg (90385 bytes)In 1888–1889 Albert Spalding took a group of major league players around the world to promote baseball. It was the first-ever world baseball tour. The tour made stops in Hawaii (although no game was played), New Zealand, Australia, Ceylon, Egypt, Italy, France, and England. The tour included future Hall of Famers Cap Anson and John Montgomery Ward.  The tour is depicted in the 2015 movie "Deadball".

"The condition may look rough to the novice but

actually it's not bad, and relatively easy to restore."

happened across this very rare board game after it closed on eBay Apr. 15, 2015 for $787.78. Any baseball board game made by McLoughlin Bros. would be rare and sought after by collectors. However this particular game is so rare it's the first example I've seen. The condition may look rough to the novice but actually it's not bad, and relatively easy to restore. The sides, referred to as aprons, are the main flaw and easiest thing to fix by a good restorer. The damage to the lithography at the bottom is minor, and again an easy fix for a competent paper conservator. The most well known board game makers who made these Victorian style games would be McLoughlin Bros., Singer, Selchow and Richter, and Parker Brothers. Among board game collectors McLoughin Bros. are generally considered the best graphics and most desirable. This was a rare treat to see this game surface on the market. I prefer to feature items in better condition but this was an important piece you should know about.
