_______________________________________
Overview:
This is a very interesting auction in that it
will be held at and during the Super Bowl for
the first time, Jan. 31, 2009. Depending
on the amount of air time given the auction,
there is the potential for the mainstream,
i.e., those outside the hobby to be introduced
to sports antiques. |
Lot
55 "Goal
from Field" Estimated Price $750.00-$1,000.00 44"
wide by 14" tall print titled "Goal
from Field", marked "Copyright 1910 by Close, Graham, and Scully, New York.".
This could loosely be called a Yard Long style
print, a genera of American chromolithographic
prints produced 1880-1910. Hunt's description
doesn't indicate the artist, just the
lithographic firm Close, Graham, and Scully.
There were a number of generic baseball and
football yard longs produced and they're all
dynamite...a lot of bang for the buck. I have
another football yard long titled
"Touchdown?" by J.D. Whiting.
There are baseball, football, track, and I
recently learned of a rowing one I'm on the
search for by Hibbard V.B. Kline. The Hunt description
indicates this example has the original frame
which is a very important bonus...no mention of
glass...which, having the all important original
wavy glass would escalate it's status. |
Lot
54
, Football
folk art oil painting Estimated Price $750.00-$1,000.00 24"
tall by 12" wide, Likely the finest folk
art football painting you'll ever see. I've
never seen a better, has it all, size, quality
execution, and a great football motif frame. |
Lot
49 - Game of
Touchdown Estimated Price
$400.00-$500.00 1897 "The Game of Touchdown" football card game.
First example of this little game I've seen. Interesting collaboration of interests.
The game was an advertising promotion for Thompson Brothers Clothiers, Bath ME,
copyright 1897 J.F. Evans, made by J.W. Kelley, Portland, ME. |
Lot 56
- c.1890s. Morrill Football Nose Mask original
box, and nose guard Estimated Price
$1,500.00-$2,500.00 Incredibly rare, I've never seen a nose guard box before. The wording of the Hunt
description
"The box is accompanied by a matching Morrill nose guard...." sounds like the nose guard that
comes with it isn't the original, no big deal it's still an exceptional offering but it should
be clarified. |
Lot
71,
"The American
Idol" football statue Estimated Price
$1,500.00-$2,000.00 "The American Idol", 12" tall plaster statue of a c1910 football player sitting on the bench.
A very rare and well done example of football sculpture by an obscure sculptor named William C. Both from Chicago,
has original metal title plate
|
Lot
68
Harvard Brand Corn Syrup
tin w/ football Estimated Price $750.00-$1,000.00 c1920s 5 1/2" tall Harvard Brand Corn Syrup tin. Tin is in exceptional condition. These are quite rare,
only the 2nd example I've seen. The other is blue, and in my collection. Has paper label
