Lot
No. 1052
44 3/4" wide by 26" tall "FOOT
BALL" ENGRAVING/PRINT BY
THOMAS WEBSTER
SOLD
FOR
$600.00
I
consider this one of the most important football art
works, and arguably the most important 'work of art on
paper' featuring football. Though English, it captures,
large and poignant, the embryonic innocence of the
game from which today's college and NFL game developed. I
would put it up nearly as football's answer to baseball's
"Union Prisoners at Salisbury North Carolina".
Hans Gerretzen of the Netherlands, one of the world's foremost
soccer/Euro football collectors advised me it's quite rare
in good condition, and he's seen very few even in Europe.
Moreover, this example is only the second one I've seen
for sale or auction. The other I acquired and have in my
collection. -Carlton |
